Dr. Sutton is a child and adult psychiatrist, and psychoanalyst. He graduated in medicine from Oxford University in the UK and trained in child and adult psychiatry and psychoanalysis in Canada. His practice includes adult psychotherapy and psychoanalysis, child psychotherapy, marital and family therapy, parent counseling, parenting capacity assessment in child welfare matters, assessment in custody and access disputes, and psychiatric assessment in civil litigation.
Dr. Sutton was on the staff at the Hospital for Sick Children, and from 1986 to 1995 was Head of the Infant Psychiatry Program at the hospital. He is a member of the Faculty of the Toronto Child Psychotherapy Program and of the Toronto and Ottawa Institutes of Psychoanalysis, and is an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry in the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Toronto. He has taught courses on infant and preschool development, infant psychiatry, and psychoanalytic theory. He is the co-founder of the Infant Mental Health Promotion Project of Metropolitan Toronto (IMP).
He has professional interests in infant and child development, parenting, parent-infant and parent-child relationships, and their disturbances. He has written and presented at national and international conferences concerning problems in infancy, infant development, post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, parenting problems, parental grief after the loss of a baby, and custody and access issues. He has presented at continuing legal education events on custody and access issues.
